HOW POLYPHENOL-RICH SORGHUM BICOLOR LEAF EXTRACT COULD BE OF HELP TO KIDNEY PATIENTS

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

NATURAL REMEDY FOR CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

Kidney disease is a serious health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Once the kidneys are damaged, their ability to filter waste products and excess fluids from the blood may be impaired, leading to a buildup of toxins and fluids in the body. Although there are various treatments available for kidney disease, such as medication, dialysis, and transplantation, some people may seek alternative therapies, such as herbal remedies, to complement or replace conventional treatments.

One such herbal remedy is Jobelyn, a dietary supplement made from the leaf sheath/stalk of Sorghum bicolor, a cereal crop widely grown in Africa and other parts of the world. Jobelyn has been claimed to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-boosting properties, and has been used in traditional medicine to treat various health conditions, including anemia, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease.

A recent case report published in the Journal of Kidney Disease and Transplantation Reports described the successful use of Jobelyn in a 46-year-old patient with serious kidney impairment. According to the laboratory report, the patient had high levels of creatinine (496.1 umol/L) and urea (12.1 mmol/L), which are indicators of poor kidney function. The doctor told the patient that the damage to the kidney was irreversible, but the patient decided to try Jobelyn anyway. He took 1.0g of Jobelyn capsules three times daily for four weeks and then had another laboratory test.

To his surprise and delight, the patient's creatinine level dropped to 81.1 umol/L, which is within the normal range (62-115 umol/L), and his urea level decreased to 3.2 mmol/L, which is also within the normal range (2.86-8.57 mmol/L). This remarkable improvement in kidney function was attributed to the beneficial effects of Jobelyn, which may include the reduction of inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular damage in the kidneys.

This case report is a clear indication of the effectiveness of Sorghum bicolor leaf sheath extract in treating kidney problems. The patient's creatinine and urea levels significantly decreased after taking 1kg of the supplement for 4 weeks. This is supported by the polyphenol content of the extract, which has been shown to have therapeutic effects on HIV patients and can suppress the proliferation of cancer cells. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory effects of the extract can help ameliorate the toxicity of aflatoxin B1-mediated liver and kidney derangement in rats.

Sorghum bicolor leaf sheath extract has shown promising results in the treatment of kidney and liver problems. Its high polyphenol content and anti-inflammatory properties make it a valuable supplement for improving overall health and well-being.

Interestingly, a scientific study conducted in rats also found that Sorghum bicolor straw dye, which is a natural colorant used in food preparation, could protect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative stress. Cisplatin is a chemotherapy drug that can cause kidney damage as a side effect. The study showed that rats fed with diets containing 0.5% and 1% sorghum straw dye had significantly lower levels of plasma creatinine, uric acid, urea, and blood urea nitrogen, as well as higher levels of kidney antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione-S-transferase, compared to rats that were not fed with sorghum straw dye.

The researchers concluded that dietary inclusion of sorghum straw dye as a colorant could have potential health benefits, including the protection of kidney function against oxidative stress and toxic insults. Although the study was conducted in rats and further research is needed to confirm the safety and efficacy of sorghum straw dye in humans, the findings suggest that this natural remedy may offer a promising alternative or complementary therapy for kidney disease.

In summary, the use of Jobelyn and sorghum straw dye may help protect kidney function by reducing inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular damage in the kidneys. While these herbal remedies should not replace conventional treatments for kidney disease, they may offer additional benefits and improve the quality of life for patients with kidney impairment. As always, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment or supplement, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking medication.

There have been several studies conducted on the beneficial effects of polyphenols, including Sorghum polyphenols, on kidney functions. Here are some references:

Jobelyn® is built with science. It is: ● A powerful antioxidant-rich supplement made of sorghum bicolor leaf extract ● All-natural ● Chemical-free ● Gluten-free

These studies suggest that Sorghum polyphenols can improve renal function by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and protecting against nephrotoxicity.

Sorghum is rich in phytochemicals that have been reported to have glucose-lowering or hypoglycemic properties (4). Animal studies have reported that feeding diabetic mice sorghum extract has an anti-diabetic effect (5), (6).

A Korean study found that sorghum extract exerts an anti-diabetic effect by improving insulin sensitivity in mice fed a high-fat diet (7). A preliminary study on six non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients showed that selected sorghum recipes exhibit a hypoglycemic effect (8).

Sorghum has a low glycemic index. A study published in the Journal Of The Science Of Food And Agriculture reported that consumption of low-GI and low-GL sorghum-based foods may help in decreasing postprandial blood glucose levels (9).

However, more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and potential benefits of Sorghum polyphenols on kidney health.
